We will hold Tagajo History Course.

Date of the event Sunday, November 12, 2023

The site of Taga Castle will celebrate its 1300th anniversary in 2024. Since its establishment in 1969, the Taga Castle Ruins Research Institute in Miyagi Prefecture has been conducting excavations at the Taga Castle Ruins for more than 50 years, and has been working to elucidate the actual situation of ancient Taga Castle. In the survey, a wide variety of relics, such as tiles, earthenware, metal products, and wood products, have been excavated. Among them, wooden letters and lacquer paper documents are remarkable.
Many ancient literature historical materials are mainly written at the time of the capital (Nara and Kyoto), and there are only a very limited record in the region. Since wooden letters and lacquer paper documents have been around the ground for a long time, they can be said to be rare materials that convey the documents used around the ancient Tagajo to the present day as they are.
In light of this importance, lacquer paper documents were designated as important cultural properties in March 2022, and wooden letters were designated as important cultural properties in June 2023. In commemoration of the designation of Kikan, Professor Akihiro Watanabe of Nara University, who has long been involved in the research of Kikan, including Heijo-kyo, will give a lecture on the ancient Japanese society revealed by Kikan and the value of Kikan excavated from Tagajo.
