A golden connection between Tohoku and Todai-ji Temple
Tsunagu, Tsunageru. Tagajo.

Todaiji Temple

During the Nara period, Emperor Shomu, who faced various national crises, attempted to govern the country with the power of Buddhism and progressed with the construction of the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple. However, just before its completion, there was a shortage of gold to coat the Great Buddha. At that time, in the year 749, it was reported that gold had been discovered in Oda District, Mutsu Province (present-day Wakuya Town, Miyagi Prefecture). The Governor of Mutsu at the time, Kyoufuku, contributed 900 ryou (13.5kg) of gold, and with that gold, the Great Buddha was completed.

Wishing for peace and prosperity,
golden flowers bloom.

Golden flower

The Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple symbolizes the hope for various hardships to be calmed and peace to prevail. The gold that led to the completion of the Great Buddha was also a beacon of hope. Even Ootomo no Tabito, who is said to have ended his days in Tagajo, left a poem celebrating the discovery of gold in Mutsu and the completion of the Great Buddha:
"In the eastern mountains of Mutsu, Golden flowers bloom,Heralding the prosperity of the Emperor's reign."
(The golden flowers bloom in the mountains of Mutsu in the eastern land, signifying the prosperity of the Emperor's reign.)
